Balancing Security and Usability in the Swiss Post E-Voting Protocol
Electronic voting has been back in production in Switzerland since 2023. Starting from the basics, this talk presents the cryptographic protocol underlying the Swiss Post e-voting system, the voter journey, and the associated trust assumptions. Emphasis is placed on the trade-offs between the system's security properties, usability, and performance.
Measures taken to strengthen transparency and auditability are also described. A particular focus is placed on the concept of universal verifiability – ensuring that every step, from ballot casting through the voter to the final tally through the Canton, can be independently checked. The talk concludes with open challenges and ongoing work on distributing trust between the system components.
Speakers:
Audhild Hoegaasen and Chiara Spadafora, Lead Cryptographer and Cryptographer of the E-Voting Team at Swiss Post.
An apéro will follow the talk – a great opportunity for networking and exchange with peers from the tech and security community. People of all genders are warmly welcome.
Register now – deadline is 28 April 2026.
